Exercise on Italian relative pronouns - Fill in the blanks
Italian has three relative pronouns: che (who, which, that), cui (who, which, that) and il quale (who, which, that).
Che replaces the subject or the direct object complement; it is never preceded by a preposition.
Cui replaces the indirect complement and it is always preceded by a preposition.
Il quale replaces the subject, the direct object complement or the indirect complements. It changes according to gender and number, and is also often preceded by a preposition.
1. Ieri sono uscita con Andrea è un ragazzo molto interessante.
Yesterday I went out with Andrea who is a very interesting guy.
2. La macchina ho comprato due mesi fa consuma molta benzina.
The car that I bought two months ago needs a lot of fuel.
3. Non conosco il pittore di tutti parlano.
I don't know the painter everyone is talking about. (/of who everyone is talking.)
4. Ho chiamato la mia amica vive in Argentina.
I called my friend who lives in Argentina.
5. Io gioco a calcio nello stadio si trova vicino a casa mia.
I play football in the stadium that is close to my house.
6. Il computer vedi vicino alla finestra è di Marco.
The computer that you see next to the window is Marco's.
7. La ragazza con stavi parlando vive in Sicilia.
The girl you were talking to lives in Sicily. / The girl with who you were talking lives in Sicily.
8. Il ragazzo si è laureato in Ingegneria stappa una bottiglia di champagne.
The guy who graduated in Engineering pops a bottle of champagne.
9. Non mi ha ancora restituito il libro gli avevo prestato.
He hasn't returned the book (which) I lent him yet.
10. La panchina su sono seduta è stata dipinta da poco.
The bench I'm sitting on was freshly painted./The bench on which I'm sitting was freshly painted.
