Italian conjunctions list
A conjunction (congiunzione) links words, phrases or clauses and shows the logical relationship between them.
Coordinating conjunctions (and, but, indeed, also)
These conjunctions join two or more syntactically similar phrases.
E vs Ed
Remember! Ed (And) is used instead of E when it precedes words beginning with a vowel.
Check out the following example.
|E (+ consonant)||Ed (+ vowel)|
|Mangio e vado al mare.||Mangio ed inizio a scrivere.|
|I'll eat and I'll go to the sea||I'll eat and I'll start writing|
Subordinating conjunctions (where, because, since)
These conjunctions link two or more phrases, and one of them depends on the other.
Dal momento che
|Anche se||Even though|
|Come se||As if|
|Finchè||As long as|
Indirect speech conjunctions (how much, how, if)
These conjunctions that usually introduce reported speech are generally preceded by verbs such as Chiedere (Ask), Dire (Say), Raccontare (Tell).
Position of conjunctions
Conjunctions are usually at the beginning of the phrase they introduce.
Their position in a sentence isn't, however, fixed, and depends on the communicative intentions of the speaker.
Take a look at the following example.
|Introducing a phrase||Another position|
|Non ho comprato il pane anche se mi avevi detto di prenderlo.||Sarebbe meglio, tuttavia, comprare il pane.|
|I didn't buy the bread even though you told me to do so.||It would be however better, to buy the bread.|
