Italian adverbs of manner formation
Adverbs of manner are generally formed by adding the suffix -mente to qualifying adjectives on their singular feminine form ending in -a:
|Masculine adjective||Feminine adjective||Adverb||English|
|Onesto / Sincero||Onesta / Sincera||Onestamente / Sinceramente||Honestly|
Here are some common exception when it comes to the formation of adverbs of manner with the suffix -mente.
Adjectives ending in -e
To form adverbs with adjectives ending in -e simply add the suffix -mente.
Adjectives ending in vowel + le/re
To form adverbs with adjectives ending in vowel + le/re, drop the final -e of the adjective and add the suffix -mente.
Masculine adjectives used ad adverbs
Some masculine adjectives can be used as adverbs without adding the suffix -mente.
The translation in English is generally carried out with the expression "way".
Lui parla chiaro.
He talks in a clear (straighforward) way.
It's still possible to add the suffix -mente, the meaning remains unchanged.

He talks clearly (straightforward).
Some adverbs have completely irregular formations; they must be learned by heart.

Hi! I am Donatella, I'm Italian and I have been living in Vienna since 2009. I teach Italian and German as a foreign language. I really... like teaching and I enjoy it! Every day I have the great chance to work together with people with different ages, backgroung and learning goals. Thanks to my job I can broaden and deepen my knowledge and skills and of course meet people from all over the world.Foreign languages represent my first interest, as a learner too. After having experienced a distance learning course I find the e-learning a personal, specific and practical method to learn, improve or polish up a foreign language! I would be glad to hear from you! Read more
