A concrete common noun designates a person, thing or animal that we can see or touch.
An abstract common noun designates a person, thing or animal that we cannot see or touch.
How to use French common nouns ?
As explained previously in the table, there are different categories of common nouns that can be used to express different meanings:
- Abstract nouns designates an idea, a concept.
- Concrete nouns designates persons, a group or a compound noun

Particularities and exceptions
In some cases, the common noun does not have a determinant:
1. In some nominal groups
La plage de sable noir. (The beach of black sand)
2. In some enumerations
Il y a tant de personnes ici: cousins, frères et oncles ! (There are so many people here: cousins, brothers and uncles)
3. In some proverbs
Pierre qui roule n'amasse pas mousse. (A rolling stone gathers no moss)

We are an Italian family residing in France for 3 months, we have two 10 year old children who have just started attending CM1. We asked Natalia to give the children two lessons a week to speed up their learning. We are super happy with the choice. Francois is very patient with my learning, especially as I am an absolute beginner. The lessons contain of a check of the homework, a review of the last lessons, and lastly new vocabulary. Lou works in a very structured way and sent me teaching material before the lesson. After a bit of small talk, we worked on the topic of the lesson, with the lesson divided into reading comprehension, discussion of the text, listening comprehension of a video and a written assignment on the topic.
