  • In English, the words myself, oneself,... are used in combination with reflexive verbs. In Turkish, the suffix -(i)n shows that the subject and the object are the same in a sentence. The reflexive mood can be seen with certain verbs.

     The most common reflexive verbs

    giymek (to wear ) giyinmek (to dress oneself)
    taramak (to comb) taranmak (to comb one's hair)
    yıkamak (to wash) yıkanmak (to wash oneself)
    soymak (to undress somebody) soyunmak (to undress oneself)
    kurulamak (to dry something) kurulanmak (to dry oneself)
    örtmek (to cover) örtünmek (to cover oneself)
    sarmak (to wrap) sarınmak (to wrap oneself)

     

    Examples

    • Active: Biz bir çok yeri gezdik. (We have visited many places.)
    • Reflexive: Biz şehirde gezindik. (We walked (ourselves) along the city.)

     

    • Active :Giysileri yıkadım. (I washed the clothes.)
    • Reflexive: Ben yıkandım. (I washed myself.)

     

    • Active: Giysileri kuruladım. (I dried the clothes.)
    • Reflexive: Ben kurulandım. (I dried myself.)

     

    • Active: O kırmızı elbiseyi giydi. (She wore a red dress.)
    • Reflexive: O giyindi. (She dressed herself.)
