    Some Turkish adverbs are formed by adding the suffix forms of ‘-ce and -ca’ to the adjective according to the vowel harmony rules. These adverbs are called the 'adverbs of manner.' Turkish adverbs of manner are formed by adding the suffix forms of '-ce' while in English adverbs are formed by adding the suffix '-ly' to the adjectives, 


    • Zeki (clever) + -ce suffix : zekice (cleverly)

    Position of adverbs of manner

    The adverbs of manner are used before the verb and complete the meaning of the verbs in terms of the manner. It can be found as an answer to the question 'nasıl?' (how?)

    Example dialogues

    • Nasıl konuştu? (How did he talk?)
    • Yavaşça konuştu. (He talked slowly.)


    • Nasıl ayrıldı? (How did he le left?)
    • Evden hızlıca ayrıldı. (He left from house quickly.)


    • Beni nasıl bekleyecekler? (How will they wait for me?)
    • Seni güzelce bekleyekler. (They will wait for you nicely.)


    • Burası nasıl? (How is here?)
    • Burası evim gibi değil. (Here is not like my home.)

    Formation of adverbs of manner with the -ce and -ca suffixes

    Some Turkish adverbs are formed by adding the suffix ‘-ce’ or '-ca' suffixes to the adjective.  

    enlightened When the word ends with one of the letters “ f, s, t, k, ç, ş, h, p” the suffix  –ce changes with the -çe and when the word's last vowel is one of the letters 'a, ı , o , u' the suffix -ce changes with the -ca.

    yavaş (slow) yavaşça (slowly)
    kolay (easy) kolayca (easily)
    sessiz (quiet) sessizce (quietly)


    'Bir biçimde' or 'Bir şekilde'

    The suffix '-ce' cannot be used for every adjective. The word 'bir biçimde' (in a way)  that has the same meaning as the suffix '-ce' is sometimes used instead of the suffix '-ce' .


    • Üzücü bir biçimde ağlıyordu. He was crying in a sad way (sadly).
    • Sempatik bir şekilde konuşuyor. She speaks sympathetically (in a sympayhic way).
