In this chapter you will learn about the Dutch nouns. In this chapter you can learn how to use nouns and how to form them. In the subchapters you will learn about the gender of nouns, the plural, diminutives and compound nouns.
Nouns are words that describe objects, people, animals, events, places and ideas. Nouns can be used with an indefinite article ('een') or with a definite article ('de' / 'het').
Indefinite nouns are used when people talk about something in general or when people think others might not know what they are talking about.
Examples:
Definite nouns are used when people are sure that others know what they are talking about. There are no rules to determine if a word gets 'de' or 'het'.
Examples:

The Dutch language has countable nouns and uncountable nouns. Countable nouns are objects that can be counted. Uncountable nouns can't be counted or need another element to be able to count them.
For example:
The table below shows examples of countable and uncountable nouns.
Countable nouns | Example | Uncountable nouns | Example |
---|---|---|---|
Het huis (the house) | Wij bouwen twee huizen. (We build two houses.) | De liefde (the love) | Hij geeft haar veel liefde. (He gives her a lot of love) |
Het bord (the plate) | Er staat een bord op tafel. (There is a plate on the table.) | De melk (the milk) | Ik drink graag veel melk. (I like to drink a lot of milk.) |
De schoen (the shoe) | Hij heeft zes paar schoenen. (He has six pairs of shoes.) | Het geld (the money) | Wij verdienen veel geld. (We make a lot of money.) |
De bloem (the flower) | Jullie krijgen bloemen van haar. (You get flowers from her.) | De muziek (the music) | Zij luisteren de hele dag muziek. (The listen to music the enitre day.) |

Hello,
I'm offering informal Dutch and English lessons based on conversation and will conduct my lessons for as much as possible in the target language.
I use text, weblinks to tv shows to get us talking and am a fan of the TPRS method.
There's a lot of information on that method online. Basically it's getting to know the structure Dutch and English through simple conversation. (questions about 1 or several sentences on any topic)
I have some useful weblinks to tv shows in Dutch (with subtitles in Dutch) adjusted to your level and the shows are entertaining too. :-)
We can discuss the shows preferably in the target language of course.
I can explain some grammar too if needed and have articles and books ready to read from. This again will be adjusted to your proficiency. But of course if you'd like to focus on a topic which has your interest that is possible as well. This makes it more personal and more fun.
I've been teaching for about a year now on another platform to students from all over the world and really enjoy having the experience again as I used to be a vocal coach back in the days when I attended conservatory in the Netherlands.
I hope to see you here on Co language. :-)

Hello there,
I'm Eveline Debouvere, polyglot and a world citizen! It would be my pleasure to help you improving your Dutch or German language skills. Tell me what you want to learn and I'll adapt my course to your needs. As I am working as a sales person for the Scandinavian and German markets in a medium-sized company, I am able to improve my own language skills every day. Knowing the importance of learning languages in a good, but fun way makes it easier to teach myself. On top of that I've already taught different languages to different students. All of them were amazed by the way the course is adapted to their needs during the teaching process.
Do you want to find this out yourself? Please contact me!
Until then I wish you all the best!

Maybe you need to learn French or Romanian and the momentum is missing. Maybe you are an expert in another area, and you don’t feel to learn a foreign language. I understand it very well because I noticed it many times in my 6 years experience as a teacher and examiner. Though, allow me to communicate with you not as a teacher, but as a permanent and impassioned language learner. Allow me to transfer to you a part of my enthusiasm and my conviction that anyone can learn a foreign language in a funny way. Firstly, I promise you that a foreign language is an open door to another mentality, to another culture. I’m writing from my experience; I’m Romanian and I’m learning French since I was 8 years old. It’s not an easy language, especially at advanced levels, yet in my opinion, it’s the most elegant language. French transferred to me not only an elegant way to express myself - even in my mother tongue but also a different way of thinking; I read in French many classical French writers. During my master studies, I had also the chance to live among French students and I borrowed from them a great way to schedule a working day. I honestly think that learning French or Romanian could mean for you adding value to yourself.

Emilia is a very experienced teacher. I enjoy every lesson with her, she is able to make it fun, but also full of structured information. In this way I was able to see a progress without much effort on my own. I work full time, therefore the lessons with her became my oasis of learning bites outside work. I strongly recommend her as a teacher. Due to her knowledge of other languages she is able to pinpoint why I make some of the mistakes (I sometimes translate the structure of sentences from other languages), and in this way the learning process is easier . She is always pacient in explaining every new grammar topic and I appreciate her skills in coming up with captivating conversation topics in the language learning process.

My name is Brenda and I am born in the Netherlands. At the moment I live in Nijmegen, the oldest city of the Netherlands. A lot of foreign students live here because it is a university city.
I have been interested in languages from an early age. That is why I have learned English, German, French and Spanish. But in my area I am mainly known for my excellent Dutch language skills and my eye for spelling and grammar.
Other things that interest me are cooking and baking and being creative. As a volunteer I have given guided tours and I have done workshops in both English and Dutch. I also love walking in nature or enjoying the beach and the sea!
I am currently learning Turkish, so I fully understand what you are experiencing as a language student. That’s why I am very patient. We practice as much as what you need. Is there something you don’t understand? Feel free to ask again, then we can approach the material in a different way so that it is clear for you.
I also know from experience how great it feels when you can communicate with someone in the local language! So let's go for this challenge together!
Your needs and progress as a student are central.
Please indicate before the first lesson what you would like to work on so that I can prepare myself for the lesson. A number of options are:
- Preparation for the integration course (inburgeringscursus)
Speaking, listening, reading and writing. Cultural and work-related topics.
- Beginners - Advanced (Personalized Lessons) Dutch
We can focus on every aspect of the language. When you want to learn from a book we can use your material or I will advise you which book you can purchase.
As a beginner you start with the basics, the alphabet and some basic words. We extend this so that you can start simple conversations in situations of everyday life and that you become an advanced!
