In this lesson we will learn how to create the Slovak imperative and when to use it! Let's have a look at it!
Use of the imperative
- usually with an exclamation mark (!)
- if it is without exclamation mark, in plural forms it represents polite, formal way of addressing someone to do something (Choďte, Urobte, Poďme...)
- to tell someone to do something (most commonly for advice, suggestions, requests, commands, orders or instructions)
Creation of Slovak imperative
Slovak imperative is formed from the word base of the third person plural.
|English infinitive||Slovak infinitive||3. person plural - they||Word base needed for imperative|
The suffix is different for each person:
|2.||ty drž||vy držte|
* (-) imperative does not exist
Here are some example phrases:
- Urobme si snehuliaka! = Let's make a snowman!
- Kamaráti, príďte na návštevu! = Friends, come for a visit!
- Jano, prestaň fajčiť! = Jano, stop smoking!
Irregular imperative of "byť"
The verb to be (byť) is an irregular verb. Here is its imperative form:
|2.||ty buď||vy buďte|
- Buď ticho! = Be quiet!
- Deti, buďte slušné! = Kids, be polite!
- Dobre dievčatá, buďme milé! = Ok girls, let´s be nice!
