  • In this lesson you will learn how to gradate the Slovak adjectives. We will show you that there are 2 types of gradation - regular and irregular. Let´s start!

First, you need to know that the adjectives are divided in 3 groups

    1. qualitative - we can gradate (milý - milší - najmilší, malý - menší - najmenší)
    2. relational - we cannot gradate, as they are usually created from the tangible nouns (drevený, kamenný, sklenený)
    3. possessive - we cannot gradate, as they represents ownership, they are declined according to models otcov and matkin

In Slovak language we know regular and irregular gradation.

    Regular gradation

    • The comparative degree is created with the ending -ší/-ejší.
    • The superlative degree is made with prefix naj- together with comparative degree form.

    For example:

    English 1st degree - adjective 2nd degree 3rd degree
    nice milý milší najmilší
    distant vzdialený vzdialenejší najvzdialenejší
    heavy ťažký ťažší najťažší
    light ľahký ľahší najľahší
    hard tvrdý tvrdší najtvrdší

    Irregular gradation

We have only 5 irregular adjectives (and their variations). Here is a list of the 5 irregular adjectives:

    English 1st degree - adjective 2nd degree 3rd degree
    good dobrý lepší najlepší
    bad zlý horší najhorší
    small malý menší najmenší
    big veľký väčší najväčší
    nice pekný krajší najkrajší

    Comparison

In Slovak language, comparison is used with the word "než", equivalent to "than".

    • than = než
    • as.... as... = rovnako... ako...
      trees trees trees
English The tree on the left is smaller than the tree on the right. The tree on the left is as tall as the tree on the right. The tree on the left is taller than the tree on the right.
Slovak Strom naľavo je menší než strom napravo. Strom naľavo je rovnako vysoký ako strom napravo. Strom naľavo je vyšší než strom napravo.
