    In this chapter we learn how to form the plural in Estonian.

    Plural of Estonian nouns

    The nomintive plural case ends in -d, which is added to the genitive singular.

    lind bird linnu linnud birds
    riik state riigi riigid states
    laps child lapse lapsed children
    õde sister õe õed sisters
    ilus pretty ilusa ilusad pretty (ones)
    • Lapsed on õues. --- Children are outside.
    • Mulle meeldivad suured linnad. --- I like big towns.
    • Linnud lendavad. --- The birds are flying.
    • Poisid jooksevad. --- The boys are running.
    • Pudelid on riiulitel --- The bottles are on the shelves.

     

    Plural of Estonian adjectives

    If a noun in the nominative plural case is modified by an adjective, it is also in the nominative plural.

    vana inimene old person vanad inimesed old people
    ilus tüdruk beautiful girl ilusad tüdrukud beautiful girls
    suur maja big house suured majad big houses
    väike küla small village väikesed külad small villages
    • Ilusad tüdrukud läksid peole. --- The pretty girls went to a party.
    • Mulle meeldivad suured aiad. --- I like big gardens.
    • Kiired autod sõitsid võidu --- Fast cars were racing.
    • Need raamatud on huvitavad. --- These books are interesting.
    • Maitsvad küpsised söödi kiiresti ära. --- The delicious cookies were eaten quickly.
