In this chapter, you will learn how to tell the time in Vietnamese. For that it is important to know the numbers already. If you haven't done that yet, go back to numbers in Vietnamese. We will provide you with clear examples on how to tell the time in different ways. If you'll have finished this part, you can try out our free exercises to test your knowledge!
In this table we will provide you with different expressions on how to ask someone for the time.
English | Vietnamese |
---|---|
What's the time now? | Bây giờ là mấy giờ? |
What time is it? | Mấy giờ rồi? |
Would you please tell me... | Làm ơn cho hỏi |
Take online language lessons with a professional teacher
In order to tell the time, you use 'giờ', which stands for o'clock.
English | Vietnamese |
---|---|
It's four o'clock. | Bây giờ là bốn giờ. |
It's five o'clock. | Bây giờ là năm giờ. |
It's six o'clock. | Bây giờ là sáu giờ. |
To tell the half hours, you use 'rưỡi' (half) after the full hours.
English | Vietnamese |
---|---|
It's half past two. | Hai giờ rưỡi. |
It's half past eight. | Tám giờ rưỡi. |
It's half past nine. | Chín giờ rưỡi. |
To tell the time after the hour from 31 minutes, you use 'kém', which means 'to'. When you refer to the minutes before 30 (1-29), the minutes are added with 'phút' without a linking word. However, 'phút' can also be left out but is added when sentences are rather short.
English | Vietnamese |
---|---|
It's quarter (15 minutes) past one. | Một giờ mười lăm. |
It's ten to two. | Hai giờ kém mười phút. |
It's twenty to three. | Ba giờ kém hai mươi. |
As the Vietnamese also use a 12 hour system, it is important to note how they refer to the specific time of the day (am/pm). They use 'sáng' for morning, 'trưa' for afternoon, 'chiều' for evening and 'tối'/đêm' for night.
English | Vietnamese |
---|---|
6 am | sáu giờ sáng |
12 pm | mười hai giờ trưa |
3 pm | ba giờ chiều |
12 am | mười hai giờ tối/đêm |
After this chapter you will know how to tell the full hours, the half hours and the specific minutes. Moreover, you'll be able to refer to the right time of the day and ask for the time. As usual, we've attached a Video for you to show it all more clearly. To further test your skills, try out our free exercises! :)

Hi everybody, my name is Tra My, I have been living in Barcelona for 5 years. I speak Spanish, English, Vietnamese, a little Portuguese and Chinese. I have 4-year experience of teaching Vietnamese language to foreigners. However, I think language is not enough. If you would like to travel, study, work, live in Vietnam, or just look for a Vietnamese partner, you need to know more about Vietnamese culture. Additionally, I was working as a lawyer in Vietnam, so I can advise you on how to start a business in Vietnam and obtain residency permits. We will talk together about it in my classes. I will accompany you from knowing nothing about Vietnam until you can negotiate the price with the Vietnamese people :) I look forward to seeing you in my classes!

Hello,
I am a multilingual teacher with experience in teaching French to German, Japanese, English, Bulgarian and Italian-speaking students, etc. (levels A1 to C1).
I have been teaching French for 8 years in Luxemburg and now in Bulgaria for 4 years, to teenagers, housewives, businessmen, employees, doctors, etc. I can also help you with DELF and DALF preparation. I give lessons via Skype, Zoom and Microsoft Teams in several countries.
My teaching method for each class : a grammar point together with listening, a lot of speaking with conversation questions or games. While you speak, I write all the new words you need to express yourself, illustrated by pictures or translated in your language.
I do my best to make you feel comfortable to speak and for you to have a pleasant time. According to me, using humour will help you learn more easily.
Whether you need to learn French for business, integration in a French-speaking country or studying, I will be happy to help you. Do not hesitate to contact me for a free trial lesson.
Looking forward to hearing from you,

I am a native English language teacher from Ireland. I have the highly acclaimed accreditation of CELTA. I have been living and teaching in Spain for the past 2 years. I specialise in medical English and in exam preparation. I have trained others to become teachers through the TEFL scheme. My students have been very successful in their exams and I have a brilliant track record. I teach all levels and employ different methods, depending on my student's level of comprehension and their objectives. So for example, if I had a juvenile A1 student, I would play games, use flash cards, keep the class dynamic and I would change activity regularly. This helps to hold their attention and keeps them engaged. Their following lesson then touches on revision and progression. If I had a C1 student, I would help them to work on their exam preparation skills and especially their grammar and speaking skills, I would also teach them specific terminology for their area of study/career.
I adore teaching, I am an excellent teacher and I can definitely help to make English easy for you. I am friendly, engaging and I can mimic different accents! :) I can teach British or American English.
I hope to welcome you to my class soon.

After one lesson, I knew that Natalia would be a great fit for me. She made the conversation fun and stimulating. Natalia was very patient with me. Yet, she also encouraged me to speak french in a way that I had not spoken before. By the end of the lesson, my french stream of conscious was more fluid than it had ever been. I know that each lesson will be the highlight of my week.
Natalia L.Sarah is an excellent student, she is so motivated! She is learning French very fast and each class I see how she is able to speak and understand so much more. I am sure she will be speaking fluently soon!

Hello everyone, I am Giulia and I am Italian.
All of my education has been gravitating towards languages, not only because of my strong desire to communicate effortlessly with people from other countries and getting to know more about their cultures, but also for my interest towards the structure of every language itself. Since the beginning of my high school years I have been studying and absorbing grammar and literature of Ancient Greek and Latin. This allowed me to improve my grammar basis and made my passion for it grow stronger. Meanwhile, I was carrying out the study of English, French and Spanish, on my own.
Later on, those languages have been the center of my studies at the University of Turin. After graduating in 2016 in Linguistic and Cultural Mediation, I decided to move to Boston, United States, in order to experience what speaking another language really means and to know more about a new culture. During my stay, not only had I the possibility to reach an advanced level of English, but I also improved my Spanish and, to a lower extent, my French, having the possibility of practicing them daily. In August 2017, I moved to Spain, where I attended a Masters in Intercultural Communication, Translation and Interpreting in Public Services offered by the University of Alcalá (Madrid).
Throughout my education I had the possibility to deepen my knowledge of the mentioned languages, to learn how to translate and interpret and I had the chance to learn more about linguistics as well. I am now fully fluent in English, French, Spanish, Portuguese and Italian.
I am a translator at core and I have been a translator intern for CIDA’ archives in Alcalá de Henares, in Spain, using different language combinations. In 2018, I moved to Portugal, where I have been working for Accenture as a Business Analyst. Meanwhile, I have been translating for YOKO Translate and for WonderWords and I have been working as a translator for private clients. I have also been teaching English for 8Belts, a Spanish company which base its courses on the e-learning. Moreover, I have autonomous students who mainly want to learn Italian, English or Spanish.
I learnt myself four languages my own way, giving importance to the grammar, but focussing also on other aspects which are usually a bit underrated, such as vocabulary and listening. I have myself created games and teaching strategies to help my students get better results, although the method is adaptable to every specific situation.
For teaching, I use some manuals depending on the level of the student, but also personal material I have been collected during the years or created. My method is a mix of standard and original learning strategies and I hope you'll have the chance to join my course and take advantage of them.
I hope my skills, motivation and commitment make me the right teacher for you.
If you need any further information, please do not hesitate to contact me. I look forward to hearing back from you. Thank you for your time and thoughtful consideration.
Best Regards,
Giulia Genovese
