Italian for Nurses: Language Preparation for Nursing Practice in Italy

What you will learn

  • Communicate in Italian during patient interviews, handovers, and clinical teamwork.
  • Prepare for Italian language evaluations linked to OPI registration, diploma recognition, and employer selection procedures.
  • Use nursing-specific terminology and the formal register expected in Italian healthcare institutions.
  • Understand and produce written Italian used in care reports, patient records, protocols, and instructions.

  • Nurses trained outside Italy who want to practise their profession in Italian healthcare institutions.
  • EU and non-EU healthcare professionals required to prove Italian language competence for employment.
  • Nurses with an A2+ level of Italian who need to reach B1 or B2 for professional and institutional use (students starting from A1 have access to our Italian A1 course).
  • Foreign nurses who have subscribed to the local OPI and would like to practice their Italian to prepare for the language test.

Develop clear and professional communication skills for Italian healthcare workplaces.

  • Present your professional profile, education, and responsibilities using formal Italian used in nursing contexts
  • Describe hospital units, services, equipment, and facility orientation within the Italian healthcare system (SSN)
  • Discuss daily duties, shift organisation, teamwork, and task planning using appropriate professional register
  • Observe patients, record vital signs, and report clinical changes accurately and objectively in Italian
  • Write basic nursing documentation and participate effectively in handovers and multidisciplinary meetings

Use professional Italian to ensure safe, respectful, and patient-centred care.

  • Apply and explain hygiene rules, infection prevention measures, and safety protocols used in Italian healthcare
  • Describe skin conditions, wounds, pressure injuries, and related nursing interventions
  • Communicate clearly about chronic conditions, symptoms, pain, and patient complaints
  • Support daily care routines, mobility, and rehabilitation using clear and respectful language
  • Report incidents, manage difficult situations, and respond appropriately to urgent or unexpected events
  • Discuss end-of-life care with sensitivity, in line with Italian ethical and clinical standards

Support patients’ physical wellbeing through accurate and understandable communication.

  • Explain medication administration, dosage, timing, and possible side effects in clear Italian
  • Communicate about nutrition, hydration, swallowing difficulties, and nutritional risk

  • Apply structured communication methods commonly used in Italian healthcare (e.g. SBAR)
  • Discuss medication groups, injections, nutritional deficits, and associated risks
  • Prepare patients for medical examinations, procedures, and surgical interventions, and provide post-procedure support

Act responsibly within the Italian healthcare system and professional framework.
