Throughout my life, my contact with English has been constant: today, I hold a C2 Diploma in English and 150-Hours TEFL Degree. Formerly, I participated in several cultural exchange programs in which English was widely used. One of them actually took me to the Forest of Dean, in England for close to a year, a project that was literally life-changing and from which I hold dear memories. My native language is, however, (european) Portuguese, and naturally I can just as well teach it in a manner that you hopefully find interesting and rewarding. In fact, for some time I worked as a translator between these two languages on a free-lance basis, so I can say that I am able to interchange them fluidly. My former experince as a teacher has been, albeit short, stimulating. For a period of approximately six months I was responsible for a small adult classroom at a company in Switzerland, teaching an A2 English level. It was in this environment that I was able to understand how my classes should be developed and I can say that I learned an awful lot on how to communicate as a teacher. As for teaching material, my proposal is that we use the structure of a course-book, complemented with researched material, properly adapted to the online class environment. I'll also be happy to help the student understand through drawings, mimics, example sentences, whatever it takes to take the information across. My approach is based on "the Active Learning Process”, which consists of skipping the traditional grammar focused lessons that are often unsuccessful and off putting, and avoiding literal translations between the two languages which slow down learning. This learning scheme consists of associating the new words directly to thoughts instead of translating to the corresponding native language idiom: the word in your new language will be stored in your brain as a proper entity, and not as a translation of something else. I do love grammar but I prefer working with images, feelings, and actions instead of spending ages filing an exercise book, and our goal is to help our students to express their thoughts and feelings spontaneously, without any mental translation process. Then, I completed a bachelor's degree in Languages and Sociocultural Studies in Colombia and recently finished my master's degree in Conflict Resolution and Peace Studies at a Spanish University. As I have had the opportunity to live in three different countries (Colombia, Brasil, and The USA), I have been able to get in-depth knowledge of not only the languages spoken there (Spanish, Portuguese, English) but also their cultures. When you discover a new culture, you get to experience a whole new set of traditions, customs, and norms, and more importantly, a unique worldview that many times introduces you to new cognitive processes.
