I have taught students as young as 3 years old and as old as 84 years from all professional backgrounds. As such, I enjoy working with all age groups, because you can learn something from people of all ages. With 17 years plus teaching experience, I have learned a variety of teaching styles that have always proved useful when creating lessons for a body of students that vary in English speaking ability and personality. What I have found beneficial to all students in a teaching setting is a combination of a teacher-centered approach and a student-centered approach. These approaches include the following: the introduction of material by the teacher, teacher and student interaction for initial practice, and then allowing the student to freely express his or her ideas with corrections where needed by the teacher. As the comprehension and speaking ability of students often vary, one of my strongest attributes is being able to create lessons that cater to the individual needs of each student. Students are quite happy with my teaching style as they are able to improve on grammar, sentence structure, pronunciation, and fluency.
I believe a teacher’s role goes beyond the classroom as it is a teacher’s responsibility to make sure his or her students not only attain information within a teaching setting, but also to make certain students are able to apply what they have learned to the lives they live outside the classroom. As such, a great teacher in the ESL profession goes beyond the call of duty by giving the extra time required without complaint to help students communicate with high efficiency their knowledge and ideas using the English language.
