In this day and age of technological advancement and product development, learning a language on your phone or laptop is rapidly replacing the traditional model of learning a new language through a typical language school with the help of books and a teacher. These days you no longer need to make that long commute for hours every week just to learn a few German words. Nor do you have to pay extreme sums of money to start learning a new language! Nowadays, online lessons offer better results with less time and less money.
But how?
There is a variety of online language learning tools available to everyone with a digital devise and access to internet, each with their own advantages and disadvantages. Everything from digital classrooms in Skype, to advanced learning software on your computer to a simple language app on your phone is just a few clicks away.
Although some might start learning a new language for fun, most of us need better language skills for more serious reasons like working, studying, traveling or living abroad. The language learning market is a booming business at the moment and there are many businesses offering different learning services and language courses online.
But which online learning method is the most effective?
This blog article discusses the learning benefits and the learning problems of some of the most popular language learning platforms and top learning apps. We also propose alternative learning solutions that address the learning problems of each app, beat the competition and offer better results for less!
This blog covers:
In search for the #1 learning app - the best of the best, the crème de la crème - I downloaded all the German learning apps I could find on Google Play Store and tested them out in search for the top 8 best learning apps out there that would help me learn important aspects such as:
Here is the fruit of my labour: an honest app review about how to go from English to German: easy, fast and cheap!
Take online language lessons with a professional teacher
Some of you might be wondering: What are best apps for learning German on Android? Is it Duolingo? I started my investigation with the same question. When I started digging deeper, I discovered many alternative (and entertaining) Duolingo spellings: Dulingo, Dualingo, Doulingo, and my favorite – Duolinguo. It just shows how popular the Duolingo app is! With over 50 million downloads on the Google App Store, it‘s one of the most downloaded apps for learning and is currently considered the #1 app for learning German! I was curious to find out why is Duolingo such a popular app and why so many users choose Duolingo to learn German. Here is a honest Duolingo evaluation from a real person trying to learn German using the Duolingo app download from the Google Play App Store. Duolingo promises “Learn German in just 5 minutes a day. For free.” But… does it fulfill its promise?

If you are stuck with a ton of language learning apps and are wondering what is the best way to learn German on your own, perhaps this is your answer. Babbel is one of the most entertaining apps out there to learn German language. This fun app is subscription based, meaning it offers only a tiny portion of its lessons for free and the rest is paid. The goal of the Babbel app and online learning platform is to armour you with enough knowledge of German words and German grammar in order to prepare you for being able to hold a decent conversation with German natives and other fellow language learners. The developers have broken down the most important topics into bite-sized pieces that are easy to comprehend and integrate into your daily life. In terms of its competition, Babbel does wonders at preparing you to understand and use real-world German, not just the textbook version!
Pros | Cons | coLanguage Solutions

One of the major learning problems that occur when learning a new language is not having sufficient vocabulary knowledge to engage in conversation and express yourself fluently. Fun easy learn app helps you learn 6000+ German words in no time! And the best part is: the app really delivers the product that it promises. Once you get used to the confusing home screen, you get immersed into the largest free database of German words! The amount and variety of words is truly astounding. Although the quality of the associative pictures in the app is not the best and some minor mistakes are present, the price-to-quality ration is very comparable to other apps on the market. Despite the simplistic and perhaps a bit childish appearance of the app, it contains one of the best resources for learning German: a ton of vocabulary training exercises to help you kick-off your German learning experience!
Pros | Cons | coLanguage Solutions
1. | Offers 3 language levels: Beginner, Intermediate and Advanced | Doesn’t teach the German Alphabet | We do not skip this important step in language learning: German alphabet and alphabet pronunciation is part of our German lessons. |
2. | Great German language app for first-time users | Home menu too confusing: too many buttons. Some exercises don’t fit well into small screens. | Our interface is user-friendly, easy-to-use and not confusing, for all devices. |
3. | Learn a ton of new German words | Not enough variety in words: too many nouns, not enough verbs. | Our German language courses cover all the important language learning bases: verbs, nouns, pronouns, adverbs, adjectives, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections. |
4. | Easy app to learn German for free | Lacks variety: this is not a flashcard app if you’re looking for one. Also there is no grammar or sentence learning. | coLanguage allows you to learn quick grammar, vocabulary and learn how to make sentences out of words effectively. |
5. | Well-developed German app | Questionable source – doesn’t list company address/location | We are a company that values transparency and honesty. We are open with our customers and provide all relevant information about our company and its services. |
Learn German is a Bravolo app that teaches you how to speak German step-by-step. It offers vocabulary training, clear German pronunciation of German words and an offline-learning option (which is paid, sadly). Learn German app allows you to learn over 800 unique German phrases and expressions although access to them may be limited to due to fact that the company wants you to pay in order to be able to learn German 24/7. It is a pity that the Learn German app by Bravolol puts profit above customer satisfaction. It could definitely learn a lot from Duolingo! On the outside it's a great app, but many of the topics it covers, such Eating, Shopping, Traveling to Work and even Romance, are paid-only. Plus you cannot get through the lessons without being showered with advertisement and requests to purchase the full version. Quite disappointing.

5. | Helps you build your German vocabulary quickly | No 24/7 access to learning new German Phrases | Our platform allows you to learn Deutsch online 24/7: complete personalized homework, practise your skills with your teacher and more! |
Their catch phrase is “Learn German like a native.” Rosetta Stone is a credible and professional source for those who are wondering how to learn German fast (but not cheap). If you want to experience all the advantages of learning German language with Rosetta Stone, prepare to open your wallets wide. Despite the semi-offensive price tag, the company has many years of experience in teaching and has consequently developed a very practical approach to learning. Rosetta Stone software is built upon a solid foundation of real-world scenarios and teaches practical skills that will be a true life-saver if you are trying to settle into a new country without speaking a word of the local tongue. You can either study on your laptop or on your smartphone - either way, if you are willing to pay the steep price, Roseta Stone app will teach you everything you need to know to be able to speak, read, and comprehend German!

Anki, or Ankidroid on Google Play, is a handy-dandy flashcard app that helps you learn German vocabulary. If you are wondering what is the easiest way to start learning German, I can tell you that a popular way is to create flashcards for word memorization. The benefits of flashcards are revealed by the learning results: within a few practice rounds, you will be able to automatically translate German words to English and vice versa. The only drawback is that you have to either download flashcards made by others (which often contain mistakes) or make them yourself (which is time consuming). But remember: the Anki app was developed to serve as a blank canvas for users to learn many things, not just German, but also other languages, definitions for school or work, etc. The concept is as simplistic as it is brilliant. Indeed, Anki is one of the best apps for learning German due to its unique and open-minded approach!
Pros | Cons | coLanguage Solutions
1. | Must-have flashcard app: can make your own or use existing | User-made flashcards contain many errors. | We offer professionally made exercises that you don’t have to worry about making or correcting yourself! |

4. | Can be used to learn how to translate German | Making your own consumes a lot of time. | Choosing our online courses will save you time, not cost it! |
5. | Can learn both on the computer and on the phone | Data cannot be synced between devices: need to remake cards if you want to use them on both | Data cannot be synced between devices: need to remake cards if you want to use them on both |
Goethe-institut is a traditional language school: it offers the traditional method of learning a new language which takes place in a classroom. This type of method has deep roots in our society and is still very popular today. Goethe-institut language school offers a variety of German courses using the traditional learning methods like textbooks, in-class exercises and a professional tutor. These methods include wacthing YouTube videos, joining Facebook groups where people help each other learn a new language or just head to an online or offline library and grap a few books! Is German a good language to learn?
Yes.
Is German an easy language to learn?
It all depends on the method of learning you choose.
Some method of learning German are more effective than others in the long-run. If you need German language for your profession, moving to live in countries like Germany or Austria, frequent traveling, long-term studying: I suggest investing in professional German courses with native teachers.
If learning German is your hobby – a free app is sufficient. Although be aware that the results may be disappointing and you are not likely to sustain this hobby for very long due to a lack of motivation and consistency in learning frequency and intensity.
The benefits of learning German are vast:
It is important to recognize that online learning apps did not make the traditional language methods obsolete. On the contrary, the traditional methods of learning with language teachers and language books are still very relevant and popular today! The most important fact that everyone needs to acknowledge is that traditional methods and modern methods are not competitors: they complement each other's strenghts and address each other's weaknesses. They are companions! Indeed, learning with both a teacher during class and getting the best of online apps outside class can maximize your learning results and ultimately help you learn a new language with more commitment and determination!
coLanguage offers you an opportunity to experience both learning with a native teacher and with the help of all the available online resources like Duolingo, YouTube, Pdf Textbooks and more!
Here is what you will receive when you choose us:
If you need the best method to learn German - for less time, less money and better results - TRY COLANGUAGE!
Unlike in other platforms, all our teachers are manually verified by our professional team. Trust in the experiences of our students.
Hello everyone and a big warm welcome to all the fellow language learners,
My name is Katerina, I’m a native Russian speaker and a foreign language teacher from St Petersburg, Russia. I’ve always been addicted to learning foreign languages, be it English, German, Spanish, Turkish or Arabic, so turning my passion into my job was just a matter of time. I have a Master’s degree in linguistics which taught me to understand the way the mechanism of a language works and thus to help my students see the logics behind the grammar rules. Being a constant language learner enables me to see the process from both sides and to predict the difficulties my students might face. The fact that I’m not a native speaker of English or German means I’ve been through exactly the same language-learning journey you’re about to take, and thanks to my personal experience as a student, I can make this road smooth for you.
I've had students of all ages, from pre-school kids to senior generation, and I feel comfortable working with both beginners and those who are eager to take their learning process to a new level. In my classes I encourage you to talk in the language we’re studying as much as possible, putting every single bit of knowledge into practice right away. If you’re a Russian-learner, I’d be glad to prove it to you that you can absolutely nail my mother-tongue - and yes, you’ll be able to make a small talk in Russian by the end of the first class even if you’re an absolute beginner! We’ll be focusing on the topics that are most relevant to your goals, while discovering the language and getting to know more about the culture of people who speak it.
I offer a short free trial class, for us to give each other a smile and discuss our teaching pattern, in order to ajust it to your goals and make our lessons the bee's knees :) See you soon!

Hi, everyone! I'm Marissa. I'm a native speaker of English from the United States. I'm currently living in Istanbul, Turkey and I can speak Turkish. I can also understand basic Spanish. I received my teaching certification in 2011 and I've been teaching ever since. I have experience working with students from all over the world, in language schools, kindergarten, exam preparation centers, and online, not only as a teacher but also as an education coordinator.
I offer my students a very structured program to help them improve their overall English level. In our trial lesson, I will evaluate your level and we will discuss your goals. I will then provide you with a coursebook and supplementary materials suitable for your level and needs. We will use these both together in class and outside of class for homework. We will cover all necessary skills (speaking, listening, reading, writing, grammar, vocabulary, and pronunciation) but we will give special attention to whatever your weaknesses may be.
Alternatively, if you are not looking for such an intensive program, I also offer guided conversation practice. I am flexible! Just write me and we can start working on a plan for you. I'm looking forward to meeting you soon. :)

Hi, I am Ana! I am a professional language teacher! If you want to learn Romanian, English or German in an easy, fun and efficient way, you’ve done the first step. I simply love teaching and I’m looking forward to sharing my enthusiasm for languages with you. I have experience in learning foreign languages, so I understand the challenge.
I’ve started teaching Romanian as a foreign language in 2010 at the Faculty of Letters in Cluj-Napoca, Transylvania, and my teaching approach is really friendly and focused on all your needs. I have worked with people from all over the world and I know very well how to make the process of learning a language a very pleasant experience.
I speak several languages (English, German, French, Spanish) and I keep learning some (Polish and Portuguese) so I am aware of how fun and also frustrating (at times) the process can be.
For me, learning a language is like falling in love, you get to discover details and awesome facts about one culture and mentality.
If you want to learn Romanian, English or German, I will make sure you will enjoy it!

Hello =)
My name is Karolin and since the beginning of 2017, while I was still living in Chile, I've been giving online classes. I really enjoy my work and it gives me the privilage to get to know people from all around the world, which is amazing.
Both in English and in German, I teach classes for beginners and advanced students. I speak Spanish fluently, but as I lived in Chile for around 5 years, both my pronounciation and my choice of words are influenced by that. I learned and teach the european Spanish but only for beginners (A1/A2). But if you don't mind the chilenean influence, I do teach to a higher level as well.
If you'd like to get to know me and my teaching methods, just contact me and we will do a free trial lesson (please do NOT by a lesson before the trial lesson, not every teacher is good for every student).
See you soon!

Hello,
my name is Nina, I'm from Austria and I also lived for one year and a half in Canada. I worked there as a German Teacher for adults, so I speak German, English and French.
I also teach English for beginners and advanced beginners.
My teaching methodes are totally based on the level of my student. If somebody is already advanced, I focus on communication and pronunciation. We will arrange on a topic and talk and discuss in the lesson about it.
If my student is a beginner, I'm gonna start with the basics of the German language. (the articles, the verb "to be", the pronouns...)
The learning material is all made by myself, because I'm a German teacher, so that means, I already got lots of working sheets for many topics. I send these to my student via e-mail or put it directly on the coLanguage homepage.
I'm available from Monday to Thursday between 5pm and 08:00 pm. For the weekend it's the best to just send me a request.
Of course is a free trial lesson (it's about 20 minutes) possible.
I'm happy to teach you :-)
See you soon! Nina

I am a native German speaker and am teaching English and German as foreign languages. I have got a teaching degree and have been teaching English and German for more than two years to all levels and age groups.
I personally prefer to speak in the learning language as much as possible and to focus on all four skills: speaking, listening, reading, and writing. Moreover, I like to cover practical topics that can be used in your everyday life and make classes as diverse and dynamic as possible. Nevertheless, I am always open-minded to suggestions coming from students.
Concerning materials I like to use a course book and in addition worksheets, audios, videos, etc.
In case you have got any further questions, don't hesitate to contact me :)

Hello =)
