In traditional systems, grammar is emphasized, but I think learning a language the way a baby learns language will be both fun and permanent for the student. Merhaba! I’m Can from Izmir, Turkey. I am a professional language teacher and a research assistant at Dokuz Eylul University. I have been a... language coach for over 8 years and am currently completing my PhD. My journey with learning and teaching languages began in my early days in academia. Much of the information presented to me in class was referenced in English. Although I studied English for 8 years from middle to high school, I could barely put together 3 sentences. I found myself, along with my classmates struggling to understand and keep up. This is when I realized that standardized teaching methods are not meant to teach us to speak the language, but instead are meant to teach us the bare minimum. I had no choice but to come up with a method to learn English quickly so I can pass my classes. I’ve read many textbooks and have used every possible app to learn English and none of them provided me with a method to reach my goals. Once I realized the downfalls, I created my own unique method of language learning and in a very short time period became fluent in English. I then decided to test my method again and learned French followed by German. As I perfected my method, learning each language became easier. I learned these three languages on my own, without traveling abroad. Once I became fluent, I found the confidence to live in both London and Paris. (I'm not sure whether this quotation belongs to him or not, but I liked it. :) “He who dares to teach must never cease to learn.” First of all, we as teachers must improve ourselves about everything such as cultural knowledge, technology, best seller books new novels etc. We should keep up with the times and try to understand our students. Then we should know students’ interests, needs, backgrounds and their level of English / Turkish. If we know the aforementioned things, it would be easier for us to decide what kind of materials we can use to attract their attention. Also, one of the key points is that we should motivate the students to learn. As teachers we should teach our students why they learn language/grammar/vocabulary etc. rather than just memorization. Regarding teaching methods we can use student-centered methods. We should use examples from real life so they can broaden students’ knowledge. Also using examples from real life, help students to internalize the examples. I strongly believe that we should make our students acquire the language from all aspects including reading, listening, writing, and speaking. All in all, as a teacher we have lots of things to do.
