NascondiCome si usa il past perfect continuous in inglese?
Il past perfect continuous si usa per porre l'attenzione sulla durata di un'azione nel passato, ovvero per parlare di un evento che si è protratto per un certo periodo di tempo le cui conseguenze sono ancora evidenti nel momento generalmente espressa con il past simple in inglese.

| I had been driving all morning when I stopped for lunch. | Era tutta la mattina che guidavo quando mi fermai per pranzo. |
I due casi principali nei quali si usa il past perfect continuous sono i seguenti:
1) Per azioni che sono iniziate prima del momento in cui si sta parlando nel passato e che si sono concluse quando è iniziata un'altra azione nel passato.

| It was now six and he was tired because he had been working since dawn. | Erano le sei e lui era stanco perchè stava lavorando dall'alba. |
In questo caso il protagonista dell'azione che stava lavorando dall'alba ha portato a termine l'attività perché era stanco.
2) Per azioni che non si sono concluse quando è iniziata un'altra azione ma sono continuate anche oltre rispetto al momento in cui si sta parlando nel passato.

| I had been walking for two hours when I saw the hostel in the distance. | Stavo camminando da due ore quando vidi l'ostello in lontananza. |
In questo caso è sottinteso che il soggetto della frase abbia continuato a camminare anche dopo aver visto l'ostello.

Casi in cui non si usa il past perfect continuous
Il past perfect continuous non può essere usato in due casi:
1) Per le frasi negative, ad eccezione delle frasi in cui si riprende a fare qualcosa che non si faceva da tempo

In questo caso il soggetto non studiava da tempo, tuttavia stava studiando nel momento della chiamata.
2) Con i verbi che non sono d'azione, come:
- verbi di stato (be, have)
- verbi di stato mentale (belive, consider, doubt, know)
- verbi di percezione (feel, hear, see)
- verbi di sentimento (like, love, hate, prefer)
In questo caso gli unici verbi che fanno eccezione sono want e in alcuni casi wish

Come si forma il past continuous in inglese?
Il past perfect continuous è un tempo composto che si costruisce utilizzando il present perfect in inglese del verbo to be e il gerundio del verbo principale.

I had been driving for hours before I realized I had taken the wrong way.
6- Ha iniziato a urlare quando lui arrivò perchè l'aveva fatta aspettare per ore.
She started to scream when he arrived because she had been waiting for hours.
7- Per quanto hai studiato prima di deciderti a cercare lavoro?
How long had you been studying before you decided to look for a job?
8- I suoi piedi stavano sanguinando perchè aveva ballato per ore.
Her feet were bleeding because she had been dancing for hours.
9- Perchè lei ha sempre mal di pancia? Ha mangiato troppo di recente.
Why does she always have stomachache? She had been eating too much lately.
10- Maria ha fatto colloqui su Skype per ore quindi aveva bisogno di una pausa.
Maria had been doing interviews on Skype for hours so she wanted a break.
Completa le frasi con il past perfect continuous in inglese.
Non dimenticare che il past perfect continuous è un tempo verbale composto formato in questo modo:
- Affermative: soggetto + had + been + verbo al gerundio.
- Negative: soggetto + hadn't + been + verbo al gerundio.
- Interrogative: had + soggetto + been + verbo al gerundio.
