I was born and raised in Ann Arbor, Michigan. I have been an educator in the Ann Arbor area since 2000. That is when I graduated from the... University of Michigan. Later, I obtained a Master’s Degree in school counseling from Eastern Michigan University. In the years that followed, I taught English, theater, Spanish, and spent ten years as a high school counselor in Ann Arbor. Now, I live near Ann Arbor with my wife, daughter, son, and our dog, Pomzilla. We say he is part Husky, part Pomeranian, and part Godzilla! That's how we made his name. I have lived in the US and Spain and have traveled to South America and Europe. Someday I would also love to visit Asia, Australia, and Africa. When I can, I love to go to baseball games in Detroit, Michigan. I would love to talk to you about your own travels! Or we could discuss where you live, your job, your hobbies, your amazing family, your cute pets, or your future plans. My teaching style is fun and I focus more on conversational English. I love to joke and have fun in lessons. I would also love to work with you on your writing. I used to do a lot of creative writing. I wrote and published a poem, two plays, a screenplay, and a novel. If you are interested, check out my website at www.endinginangels.com . If you have material from school or somewhere else we could work on that together. I am flexible and want to help students however I can. I know that learning a new language can be scary. One group I know I can really help are people applying to universities. You DO NOT have to be in this group to meet with me. This is just one area I know a lot about. Harvard! Stanford! Yale! Duke! Northwestern! And my personal favorite, the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor! Go blue! I have helped hundreds of my students gain admission to these highly selective universities as well as dozens of other schools across the US and around the world, from Ivy League to less selective state schools to community colleges with open admissions! We can discuss the application process, examine possible essay prompts, write/revise essay drafts, and explore strategies for maximizing chance of admission into universities, and look at financial aid. If you are working on SAT or ACT preparation, I can help you with this too! I helped hundreds of students with their college applications. Many of them would go on to the University of Michigan or Washtenaw Community College in our city, while others went to Oregon, UCLA, MIT, Brown, Ohio State, and many other great colleges. I believe I can use my expertise to help you improve your writing and conversation skills. We can talk about applying to universities, or about your trip to Australia last year, or your apartment in Paris, or your job as a scuba diver, or movies, or your grandmother, or your dog, or your future trip to Mars! I can’t wait to meet you!

Hello World of ESL learners I'm an experienced ESL, ELA, TEFL and TESOL independent teacher and transmedia writer. I began ESL teaching in... 1990, and returned to the field in 2018. I've a decade of combined teaching experience. My CV is a short read: I've made it a 1-pager: it's concise and comprehensive and I strongly suggest you take a look at it to get a comprehensive view on what I bring to the table as an ESL educator. It's important to stress my approach to ESL instructing is learner-centric, so you may have heard many utter this phrase, but is it just semantics, hyperbole to stand out in a crowded space? Well let me elaborate a little bit on learner-centrism as the core value of my approach to ESL teaching: The banking system of education really came into its own in the post-WW2 world and the west began to slowly eliminate the Humboldtian system from its mainframe. My preference is to mimic as far as is practical the Humboldtian and Classical Liberal Arts systems and I incorporate insights from the rich field of ESL research and development. My experience illustrates that organic modes of learning have yielded the best results with reference to capacity, fluency and confidence. Gardner's 'Theory of Multiple Intelligence Centres' is as influential as the aforementioned educational systems, and I include insights learned from the field of ESL development, research and trends. Today English is to the digital age what Latin was to the 3rd century. It is the Lingua Franca of the world and presents an exciting development in the history of languages and human beings communicating from and to almost every corner of the world. It's a great time to be learning English. There's never been a better time to be an ESL learner or teacher, especially if you're a serious lover of languages and language learning! My library of content contains top tier course materials, e.g. programmes developed by Cengage Learning and Houghton Mifflin Harcourt. All my course materials conform to global benchmark standards such as the Common Core State Standards (CCSS-USA), International English Language Testing Standards (IELTS - UK, Australia) and the International General Certificate for Secondary Education (IGCSE-UK). My capacities include testing and assessment according to benchmark standards globally recognised such as the aforementioned and also CEFR – Common European Framework of Reference for Languages). Course materials are included in the fees. I deliver my lessons via Zoom, Zhumu or Voov: all three teaching/meeting apps enable learners to join the meeting room right from your browser for your convenience Best, Desiree Lourens

Hello there, My name is Joanne Greene, I am 37 years old and live in sunny Johannesburg, South Africa. I am a native English speaker. I have... completed a number of certificates, namely Business to Business Marketing, my International TEFL Certificate, a Cambridge Assessment Certificate through Future Learn and I also have practical experience teaching English online. My background is tutoring and educating Health Care Professionals around the country, this involved me facilitating many training sessions in a classroom set up. I currently tutor two children aged 8 and 11 four times a week for the last two years. The younger one Catherine started on intermediate and has now moved up to upper intermediate and Josh started on upper intermediate and is now on advanced. I have also been teaching a 55 year old Bulgarian lady for the last 3 years. Vania started on elementary and has now moved through intermediate to upper intermediate level. My methods for teaching is mostly standard for all ages and what is important to note that every student is on their own journey, has different goals and learns at their own pace. It is important as a teacher that I can identify individual needs and provide the best tailor made learning experience for them. Firstly it is important that my students do most of the talking, this helps me to check the understanding of the vocabulary, pronunciation and sentence construction. Secondly I try to elicit as much information from my students to ensure maximum learning takes place. Another one of my very important teaching methods is self-correction and what I mean by that is if a student answers incorrectly I won't jump in immediately and give the correct answer, I would rather give a hint or clue. Most of the time the student is able to answer correct the second time around. This is very important because this is really where learning takes place, when a student discovers the answers themselves. I also believe very much in positive reinforcement, focusing on tasks completed successfully and accurately helps students to stay motivated and builds their self-confidence. Lastly it is vitally important that the vocabulary learned is retained in long term memory and how I do that is by giving the students stories and sentence to write using the vocabulary learnt and by also looking at the vocabulary in different context. I implement all these methods with TPR. I use various media and teaching materials to teach my students, some of which I have created myself such as printouts and flashcards. Some websites that I use are Live Worksheets.com, Grammar Monster.com, Breaking News English.com and ESL Flashcards.com. Through my teaching experience I have learnt the importance of and mastered my skills in building rapport with my students. Always been punctual for lessons, doing sufficient lesson preparation and creating content that I know they will find interesting and informative. Having integrity - I strive to do what I say I will do and at the time I said I would do it.

Oftentimes, when I meet a client for the first time, they tell me they feel embarrassed, frustrated or silly when speaking to English-speakers.... They blame themselves for not being able to “buckle down” and sometimes they even compare their lagging learning progress to their more advanced friends & colleagues. → I’m here to emphatically reject that line of thinking — your struggles in English are not your fault. ← You are not to blame and it’s perfectly reasonable to feel embarrassed and frustrated. You have spent years studying English textbooks, attending language schools and working with private tutors but are still struggling with the same issues that plagued you 5 years ago — and frankly — you're exhausted. My coaching approach is highly targeted, individualized & personalized to your lifestyle. By taking this approach, my clients routinely enjoy noticeable improvements in their day-day English interactions within just weeks. On a human level; I genuinely want you to be able to share your story, connect with people without anxiety & reach your potential. Please do not hesitate to reach out to schedule a meeting where I can determine your immediate needs, discuss where you want to be & develop a strategic "plan of attack" to get your there. Stay safe & be well, Coach Shawn
